Of all the questions I’m asked about maternity photography, timing is the most common — and happily, it has the simplest answer. For most pregnancies, the loveliest window for photographs is somewhere between 30 and 35 weeks.

Why 30–35 weeks?

By thirty weeks, your bump is unmistakably, beautifully present — round enough to be the heart of every frame. And before thirty-six weeks, most mums-to-be still feel comfortable enough to enjoy an hour of gentle moving, standing and changing outfits without it becoming a workout. It’s the meeting point of “glowing” and “still sleeping reasonably well.”

Expecting twins, or been told baby may arrive early? Simply shift everything forward — around 28 to 30 weeks is usually ideal. When in doubt, earlier is the safer side: a slightly smaller bump photographs wonderfully; a baby who has already arrived is a different session altogether.

Book the date before the bump

One practical note: the best time to book is months before the best time to shoot. Diaries fill seasonally, and the gentlest way to guarantee your week is to reserve it in your second trimester. We’ll pencil the date, and if your bump or your energy says otherwise as the week approaches, we simply move it — flexibility is part of the arrangement, not a favour.

Comfort is the whole plan

  • Sessions run 60–90 minutes with as many sitting-down breaks as you like.
  • The studio wardrobe has flowing gowns and simple drapes in every size — or wear your own favourite outfit.
  • Water, snacks and a comfortable chair are always within reach.
  • Partners and older children are warmly invited — some of the most treasured frames are the whole family, waiting together.
The wait is its own chapter of the story. The photographs simply make sure it isn’t a forgotten one.

If you’re somewhere in your second trimester now, this is exactly the right moment to get in touch — we’ll find your week, hold it, and the rest is simply showing up with the bump.
